# File documentation
1. **all_metadata._is1.csv**[download here](/uploads/xuewens-chinese-project/all-metadata-is-1.xlsx "All Metadata Is 1"): This documents all the basic information of a given article in the first issue （第一期） of the journal, across all years.

2. **metadata_sample_completed.csv**[download here](/uploads/xuewens-chinese-project/metadata-sample-completed.xlsx "Metadata Sample Completed"):Gives you an example of what the filled out info will look like, using a few papers in 2012.
3. **citation_net_sample**: [Xuewen 2012 Citation Net](/uploads/xuewens-chinese-project/xuewen-2012-citation-net.xlsx "Xuewen 2012 Citation Net")This gives an *example* (you will have to add all the row names yourself according to your own data!) of the citation network I want us to construct based on the reference section of each paper. Additionally, it also contains columns describing the traits of the references (works that are cited).

# Column descriptions of each file (codebook)
## metadata variables
1. **cited:** 论文被引次数，`可在知网中国引文数据库citation database 精确查找“文献来源” 《社会学研究》中找到。`
2. **topic:** 论文所研究的主题，或社会学内部领域。
具体来说，用数字代表不同领域。我这里列了一些我想到的常见的。

* 编码：
* theory 1 （社会学理论，包括某学者的具体思想探讨、思潮探讨、社会学史等，一般没有使用经验案例）
* chinese sociology 2 (大方向讨论中国社会学或社会学本土化等)
* social networks 3 (社会网络)
* stratification, social class, inequality 4 (社会分层、职业、社会阶层、社会不平等)
* Rural sociology 5 (乡村社会学)
* family, gender and fertility 6（家庭、性别、生育率）
* politics and governance 7 (政治社会学,例如国家与政府治理等)
* Urban development 8 (城市社会学，包括城市居民运动、城市企业发展、工人运动等)
* Methods 9 (定性、定量方法讨论)
* Migration 10 (人口流动、外来务工)
* Economic sociology 11 (经济社会学，城市/农村发展之外，例如理性选择理论相关的实验)
* Social welfare and policy 12 (扶贫政策、儿童福利、老人福利、福利政策研究，等等）

3. **inst**:文末“作者单位”，只需要填写第一作者的作者单位，而且不需要具体到院系（参见**metadata_sample_completed.csv**）。
4. **funding1 funding2 funding 3**
说明：
根据文章第一页脚注中提到的基金信息来填写（有的论文没有的，这三个变量就都空着）。有三个funding列，是考虑到一些题目有多个基金来源。每一个来源具体是什么，根据编码来填写，然后有几个funding来源就填满几列。

2. **ackn**：文章第一页脚注中，如果提到要具体感谢某位学者在论文写作过程中的帮助的，**ackn** calculates the number of named scholars in the acknowledgement. (比如，“评审专家”不算，但“边燕杰教授”就算一位。如果一共提到2位学者要感谢，那么ackn值为2)

1. **cited_au:** 被引学者的姓名——除了修正中英文名，应该自动从excel中导入，见http://wiki.alecmcgail.com/parsing-chinese/instructions

7. **cited_inst_txt**: 被引文献第一作者的工作单位（e.g.,西安交大，斯坦福大学）。
`注：只针对cited_origin为中国的学者！`
8 = 国外非学术单位
9 = 国内非学术单位(注：中国社科院是学术单位，但其他国家机构，如“国家统计局”、“智库”等，不是！)
99 = 信息不明， 即找不到相关资料
8. **cited_edu**: 被引学者毕业学校。
`注：只针对cited_origin为中国的学者！`
**如果在海外获得最高学历**，写明学校名称，否则空着即可
9. **cited_fem**：
被引学者是否是女性。如果非女性，可以直接空着，之后我一起填0就行了。
